The shiitake is an edible mushroom native to East Asia, which is cultivated and consumed in many East Asian countries. It is considered a medicinal mushroom in some forms of traditional medicine.

Why people love shiitake mushrooms

The umami flavour of shiitake mushrooms is a big reason people love them so. They have a richness that can be almost buttery. The texture is meatier than some other mushrooms. They can also have a nutty or smokey flavour as well. Shiitakes are a great source of vitamin D and the levels of vitamin D can drastically increase when the mushrooms are exposed to sunlight. For instance, if you grew your own organic shiitakes with our kit at home and you took the harvested shiitakes and put them gills up towards the sun, then the vitamin D levels can go up 1,000 times more than those that did not get the exposure to the sun. It is recommended to have the shiitakes in the sunlight for at least eight hours when attempting to increase the amount of vitamin D.
